That is unfortunate, that they do not teach such facts. But lack of access to pertinent details often helps keep people repressed.
Not too often, as the Federation does not trade or seek alliances with people who endorse slavery or other such forms of repression. But there are some planets out there where it is common, mostly among our enemies.
