[ she squeezes her eyes shut, urging herself not to cry, for Gloss's sake. it feels a little silly to be upset over something she already knew was going to happen - had already happened - but it tears at her insides anyway. ]
I know. [ a defeated sigh. ] Oh, Wiress. [ she still can't look at him, not just yet. he's already predicted her anger at Katniss, and they're both very lucky Katniss isn't in Eudio right now because Cash doesn't know what she'd do. but they both know what she's capable of. she squeezes his hand tighter, relaxes her grasp, and squeezes again.
when Cash opens her eyes again she's not crying but her eyes are filled with tears so it's more of technically not crying. ] I'm sorry. [ sorry he died, sorry she can't keep it together now. ] It's not fair. After everything. We won. We won and we did everything we were told to do. It wasn't supposed to be like this.

[ he shakes his head and uses the grip on her hand to pull her close to him, trying to make it so she's against his side so he can properly comfort her. of course then she says he deserved better and he sees red. ] No. You deserved better. [ she follows his lead and settles in at his side, still cautious of his wounds and not wanting to make it worse. how many times in their lives have they held each other like this, working out whatever awful shit had come their way? he'd been right that he's seen her worse - much worse - and she's seen him worse too. there's been plenty of bad but they've also been lucky to see the best in each other too.
Cash can feel him tense. she should have known it wouldn't go over terribly well to at all imply that she's gotten exactly what she deserved and he was along for the ride. but she'd said it anyway and it doesn't surprise her at all that he won't let it slide. ]
We deserved better. [ she agrees and then sighs and adds: ] I deserved better. [ sometimes she doesn't believe that. but she tries. ] You know - we finally got that. This? This is better. We can have whatever we want here. Families, real jobs, houses that no one bugged. All that stuff we always wanted we can have now. [ most of it, anyway. ]
[ he manages to tighten his hold on her as soon as she settles into his side. she may not want to make his wounds worse but he knows his limits. besides if she does manage to aggravate his injury he can deal with it. he's dealt with worse.
he tries to make himself relax as soon as she speaks. as soon as she says that she deserved better but he knows from her tone that she doesn't entirely believe it. but then she continues and Gloss can actually feel his shoulders loosening because Cash is right. this is better, this is their second chance free of any complications. ]
You're right, we can. This is— we can have everything we wanted. You and I could have a stupid double wedding with people we love and we don't have to worry about them dying or— anything like that. No strings attached.
