everyone lives in town and beyond that are fields and fields of grapes. outside of the city it's red desert for as far as you can see into the distance, with enormous sandstone rocks. it's warm the entire year and the sky is so clear you can see every star.
my parents are vintners. in late summer the grape crush starts and when it's all finished there's a harvest festival. everyone takes two days off work and there's dancing and singing and tons of food.
Every year each district has to sent one boy and one girl to the contest. The Games. We don't like to lose, so in One, we make sure that our children are strong, fast, and well-fed. When Gloss and I were eight, my parents sent us to the academy so we could train full time.
Then when I was 18, I volunteered to go. And that's how my parents became the only people to ever have their children win back to back years at the Games.
